You have to respond to the state of the game each turn and choose the right path of hero collection or monster slaying at the right time. You can’t really plan ahead because, at any moment, a failed die roll or unexpected card from an opponent could derail your plans. Here to Slay is a tactical game, not strategic. It balances the different actions really well (making attacking monsters a high-stakes, all or nothing move) and allows players to have big turns playing lots of cards or draw several cards at once when they start running low. It adds a great deal more choice to your turns at the price of making the game slightly more complex (though this is by no means a difficult game – I’d happily teach it to anyone). The action point mechanic also feels like an upgrade on Unstable Unicorns. In this way, the game feels like it has a much more definite ending than Unstable Unicorns, which always had the risk of going back and forth for hours if players kept drawing mean cards. Unlike winning with hero cards, which can be destroyed or stolen by other players, once you’ve defeated a monster there is nothing that anyone can do to take it away from you. That said, I love the option of defeating monsters to win. If you accept that going in, you’ll have a blast. Like its spiritual predecessor Unstable Unicorns, Here to Slay is a highly interactive game in which players will be doing everything in their power to get ahead by tearing other players down at the same time as advancing their own boards. Let me start by saying that if you don’t like other players messing with your stuff, this isn’t the game for you. Turns proceed and players scrap over each other’s sets before eventually, someone hits one of the win conditions and ends the game. Cloaked Sage sucks if it only applies to YOU playing Magic cards. And that’s pretty much it. With 13 in deck, you your probability of getting in your hand is very low. Because there are even less magic cards in deck than challenges. I play it as "when ANYONE plays a magic card, you draw". s still just 14 challenge cards, and they may not even be by or against you.īy the way.i do similar buff with Cloaked Sage leader. That is a great buff, but doesn't "break" the card. Modifier cards cannot be used by either player in that challenge". Here is how I play it: "When YOU ARE INVOLVED in a challenge, +2 to your roll. So how often will this leader ability really come into play with its ability helping you? VERY RARELY. And not even all challenge will involve you. There are 14 challenge cards out of 115 in deck. This card absolutely needs to be "buffed". BUT.this Leader card really sucks as printed.

So as others have mentioned, the "official" ruling even on their website is its only if YOU challenge.
